FrameMaker, WebWorks, and Oracle Help
Speaker: Kurt Ament, infotektur
This case study provides you with a real-world view of single sourcing. It demonstrates how a small, multinational task force at HP built a comprehensive single sourcing infrastructure with legacy publishing tools: Adobe FrameMaker+SGML, Quadralay WebWorks Publisher, and Oracle Help for Java and the Web. These customized tools now enable dozens of writers and translators in the U.S., Europe, and Asia to re-use modular content in different print and online formats.
What you learn
In this case study, you learn how the task force:
- Set up cross-functional content, design, and technical teams.
- De-engineered output formats, then built conversion templates.
- Built electronic bridges between off-the-shelf publishing tools.
- Converted a prototype document to test our proof-of-concept.
- Built a virtual database of referenced source documents (text insets).
- Used master helpsets to install modular subhelpsets dynamically.
- Repurposed an existing development site for bug reporting and fixing.
- Leveraged test results to humanize our conversion process.
- Explained and demonstrated our conversion process to authors.
- Established writing standards to improve usability and re-usability.
